I've been detecting some at a private Scout camp, established in 1949. My deal with them, was to "donate" all Scouting related items for their display cabinet, and I get to keep any coins or jewelry I fiind there. So far, I've given them about a dozen old pins and award items, and kept two silver jewelry pieces (and plenty of clad). Guessing that detectorists before me beat me to the older coins..
If you make a deal with the landowner, I suggest that you set aside any interesting items that you want to keep, then show the owner all the rest.

Eventually we'll get started... I think maybe we're afraid to bore everyone with our ramblings. That said, HEY - I just picked up another old Tesoro; a "closet queen" Bandido II μMAX. Hoping to give it a test run this afternoon. As much as I like my Outlaw, these Bandidos really are the stuff (have a couple now). Too bad Tesoro didn't continue on with them as Bandidos. Their "ED120" disc and simple toggle for all metal / no motion AM is really a pleasure to use in my favorite trashy search spots. Besides the Outlaw and Eldorado, it's now my most often grabbed detector. ^_^

Terry's off playing with his new Makro... I may try one sometime soon, but I've been having a great time with the ol' Bandido II μMAX and my Outlaw. Bandido found me another couple wheatbacks today, along with the usual clad. Need to research and find the local ghost towns; tired of seeing crusty zincs only a couple years old.

Since long before I was old enough to buy any firearms, I was studying up and drooling over old .22 rifles. Of greatest imterest were old American pump and lever action long guns, and especially any heavy barrel, single shot target rifles. I now have a few vintage .22s that I play with out in the forest, plinking inanimate targets (cans and such), and doing a little semi-serious target shooting. I don't hunt as I'm not hungry for squirrell, which is one of the few animals well matched to the .22's power and range. Besides, now that I'm older, I just don't feel like killing any critters. ^_^
Anyone else a fan of the coolest all-American cartridge, the venerable .22 rimfire?

Another 925 ring today, my fourth silver ring in the past couple months. Found a Pokemon pin and a bit over $4 in clad today too. Was using the Tesoro Outlaw / 8" donut. The Outlaw is great on silver! Was hunting around a fair bit of trash and had disc up high to eliminate zincs... This ring sang out like a quarter; round and smooth, not harsh like screwcap. ^_^

Canada may have a population explosion!
While I wish we had some better choices, I'm glad Mrs Clinton isn't the new dictator. I hope the new groper-in-chief makes us proud. ^_^

Looks like an effective way to clean the more valuable finds without damage.
For all my badly red-brown stained modern clad that I want to put back into circulation, I use the "soy sauce soak". Using inexpensive soy sauce which is acidic and salty, just soak your nickels, clad dimes and quarters for a few hours. They come out looking like money again after rinsing and wiping 'em off. Spray a little WD-40 on 'em after cleaning so they stay silver colored, and they're good to go. ^_^

A few oddities found with my Outlaw this week: The wrench is brass or bronze and apparently to tighten fire hose fittings. It also works as a beer bottle opener. ^_^ LA dog tag expired in '68. Found the 42 dime last weekend. I know that all Tesoros find the goods, but can't figure out why the Outlaw seems so underrated! It's a pleasure to use and pinpoints "dead nuts". After shrinking my target response area with the retune feature, I have to be careful with my digger... I can often poke the digger straight into the target, scratching it.

Going to try dirt fishin' around Franklin Lake tomorrow. It's a lake and park in the Santa Monica mountains that's been used in movie and TV shoots since the '30s... Probably nothing there but bottle caps and pulltabs, but you never know... I think I'll take both the Outlaw and Vaquero along. I'll put pics up if I catch anything interesting. Wish me luck.. ^_^

Well, I haven't yet taken my new Outlaw to the local camp spots I like to do, but it's been doing great in old parks where the soil seems mild to moderate. The parks aren't as trashy as the camps are, so I've been liking the 8" concentric donut on it, instead of the smaller 5.75" I usually use. Funny how whenever I get another Tesoro, it turns out being my new favorite... I haven't tried one yet that I didn't like, so now I have several. Still a couple more I need to try.. ^_^

Found out yesterday while searching for coins in lots of gravel and mineralized soil. I got permission to play in a private mountain camping area that's been around since the late 1800s. Thought I'd take the Vaquero along with the 5.75" widescan, as I'd figured that area could have a fair bit of mineralization... I had to turn sensitivity down much lower than I normally would, as I couldn't always get a solid target signal on fairly shallow (less than 5") coins with it up high. High sensitivity gave inconsistent, broken signals, but running sensitivity around 3-5, the signals firmed up. I guess the mineralization was just bouncing my machine's signal back at it with sens. set too high. Sort of like the "high beams in fog" example. I didn't find anything really old, but managed to add another three wheaties and a '40 Jeff nickel to my count. ^_^

Found more goodies with the Outlaw today; same old park I'd been going to. I knew I'd sniff out some silver there... Got a '58 Rosie dime and small silver ring, another wheatie, pile o' clad, another token (mulligan center? - never heard of it..), a Canadian quarter... and a nice assortment of pulltabs. ^_^

Nothing really exciting lately. A fair bit of clad, a few wheat cents, some junk jewelry... I did enjoy digging up this old token though. Apparently from a Chicago billiard hall, I have no guess how it got buried 4" in an old Los Angeles area park. Found with my Tesoro Silver Sabre microMAX last week.

Favorite brand is Tesoro, but in all fairness, Tesoros are the only ones I've used (though I tried a cheap bounty hunter for a couple days). My Tesoros are lightweight, durable, and just plain work. Hard to pick a favorite model as there's something to like about each one. Of the currently made models that I have, the Vaquero is my most often used. I just had it factory converted to a "high tone", so it'll probably get used even more. With my small 5.75" widescan coil on that Vaquero, I've found coins down to about 8" in composted pine needles. Works for me. ^_^
